Member Testimonials

We’re nothing without our crew! If you’re wondering what the Yeasty Boys community provides for our members, read on…

I have so much gratitude for Yeasty Boys. As an organically-grown community group, it has tapped into several vital needs for femme surfers out in NYC, including myself. First, much like most recreation clubs, it serves as a venue for enthusiasts to meet, connect and learn from each other in the pursuit of joy - here, the joy of surfing and connecting with nature. Being in the water alone can be a terrifying and dangerous aspect of surf, especially for women who are also beginners. Yeasty Boys is a key resource for both company to feel at ease in the lineup and information on ocean safety and safe surfing. It’s also encouraging women to get into a sport that isn’t always as well represented by women as it should be. I’ve gotten out on the water so much more now that I’m connected with the friends I’ve made through the group. It’s safer and more fun.

Second, it’s a group in the pursuit of community building around the Rockaways itself. Yeasty Boys puts on events - and also promotes the information and events of other groups - that highlights service to the local community. From beach clean-ups, and ocean advocacy, to volunteering for adaptive surfing sessions for those differently abled, Yeasty Boys is a group that has brought me closer to the heart of what surfing is also about - respect and advocacy for the environment and the rights of all to enjoy it. If it weren’t for Yeasty Boys I wouldn’t have found my place here in service of something larger than myself. Third, and this one is personal, through all its activities Yeasty Boys has provided tools for a consistent way to take care of my mental health. I was clueless as to how to build a routine around the water and now I’m out there weekly - happier than ever

Surfing is a life-changing and healing experience. As a mental health professional and someone who works directly in the healthcare field, surfing has helped me cope with burnout, secondary/direct trauma, and depression. By extension, it has allowed me to be present and provide better care for my patients. I am a huge believer in body movement, deep breathing, and connecting to nature to heal trauma. Can you think of anything that touches on those points better than surfing?!

However, being a woman in surfing can be extremely isolating and intimidating. Yeasty Boys is an exceptional group for helping women/femme individuals feel safe and not alone in the ocean. It fosters community, connection, and growth, in and out of the water. They provide water safety classes, etiquette classes, meet-ups, and more. Gina has created something truly special for the women of NYC and we look forward to seeing the organization expand and get the recognition/support it deserves.

My experience attending Yeasty Boys events has been supportive and fun! I learned about surf etiquette, reading the waves and ocean safety. It was really refreshing to learn more about a sport I enjoy so much while also creating such heartfelt connections with others. I felt safe and comfortable learning from Gina and the other femmes who volunteer their time.

I’m so happy to have discovered Yeasty Boys and to be a part of this amazing women’s surf community! It’s an empowering space where women can connect and share their passion and knowledge. They also have informative events and social gatherings. I’m a beginner and previously didn’t know anyone who surfed. Yeasty Boys has provided the type of support, critical insight, and sense of community I was seeking in my surf journey!
